Nice Job Badges for September 21

No long-winded preambles today! As we discovered on Wednesday, the average word count per post is running a bit on the high side of 1,000. So let’s jump right into Nice Job Badges! These are five blog links from this week that deserve a high-five and a “nice job!”

THINGS:

  • If someone makes an amazing post one week, then makes another the next, I will feature them two weeks in a row.
  • I will not typically feature the same blogger twice on one list, unless I’m really blown away.
  • The posts will all loosely be from the current seven day period.
  • They are in no particular order because they’re all great.
  • Hey, you should totally put the badge on your recognized piece with a pingback to this post!

Nice Job Badges for September 14; and, A Guide to Making the Most Boring Game Show Ever

It’s been about three weeks since the last set of Nice Job Badges, but all the same I’ve missed giving them out tremendously. I am veritably “stoked” to continue this optimistic tradition.

But first, let me take a…
You thought I was going to say selfie didn’t you?

But first, let me take a moment to give you a guide to creating the most boring game show ever, inspired by my very own super specific question of yore.

I’ve put a lot of thought into this, and the trick is to torment your audience with boredom. It’s easy to make an entertaining game show with all the suspense, hype, and flashiness thereunto pertaining. It’s also easy to venture into the realm of fascinating, where watching a show is a cathartic experience worthy of throwing one’s focus into.

So on the compass of interesting, you have entertaining to the north and fascinating to the south. To the west you have frustrating, where a show is so hard to watch due to incompetence it becomes painful. To the east you have inaccessible, where a show is so outlandish people are not going to want to tune in. To make a truly boring game show, you must have everything in prefect balance. It was an honor to receive the nomination, so thank you very much! Continue reading “Super Specific Liebster Award II: The Tension Between Who and Whom”

Nice Job Badges for August 17; or, Mild Concerns about Perpetual Hiccups

Let’s talk for a second about hiccuping. On Wednesday night I had what Nikki referred to as my “one hiccup of the year.” Nikki gets the hiccups all the time, but I only periodically have one massive hiccup, and even then it’s usually very rare.

I haven’t had proper hiccups since I was about 12 years old. This leads me to having a slight paranoia that I’m somehow due for hiccups — that one day I’m going to wake up with the hiccups and they are never going to go away. That I may spend the rest of my life unpredictably hiccuping during job interviews and speeches, and I will never be able to go to sleep again.

Anyway, for irrational glimpses like this into the strange mind of Matt, you should probably follow along on Twitter. It is, if you pardon the pun, a “happening” place right now. I never thought I’d catch Twitter-itus, but my gosh it’s fun. Once they expanded the character limit and added the ability to chain together Tweets, I could finally interact properly with the rest of the community.

So yeah, Normal Happenings Twitter — I’ll meet you there. Continue reading “Nice Job Badges for August 17; or, Mild Concerns about Perpetual Hiccups”

Nice Job Badges | August 3

“You know what I’m really looking forward to?
August.
I just love August.”
– said no one ever.

Happy August everyone, the absolute most boring month of the year.

Hey, boring can be a good thing! It helps you appreciate everyday life. If everyday was a spectacle, that itself would become a source of stress and would decrease the quality of life.

Monthly musings aside, on Wednesday I plan to release a very important update on Normal Happenings. Don’t worry, it’s a really good thing that can only make this halcyon blog even better! Until then, though, I will leave you in a state of eager anticipation.

I have to say, I’ve been very impressed with people’s blogging skills lately. There was a time back in June when I feel like there was a bit of a slow spell, but for now I’m having trouble picking just five entries for Nice Job badges. But alas, it must be done.

It’s Nice Job Badge time! These are five blog links from this week that deserve a high-five and a “nice job!”

Super Specific Sunshine Award IV

It’s been a while since the last Super Specific Sunshine Award — three months and over 100 new followers, in fact! But, leave it to the amazing The Gaming Diaries to break the dark spell! Also, they are contributing to Games That Define Us, so that’s pretty cool.

If you’re just joining us, the way I do things is a bit zany, so here’s a tiny outline:

  1. I answer the questions presented by our dear nominator.
  2. I select ten amazing bloggers to take on my questions.
  3. I come up with ten of the most outlandish, super-specific, interrogatory concepts my weird brain can conjure.
  4. I snicker at my own deviousness (this part not included).

Q&A

I guess ten questions just isn’t good enough for The Gaming Diaries. You had to go with eleven! What did the number ten ever do to you?

Name 5 things that make you happy.

  1. Pizza
  2. Pizza
  3. Pizza
  4. Pizza
  5. Pizza

Oh, sorry. My WordPress Premium Plan decided my list was unacceptable, along with the Amazon music playlist I tried to embed, custom CSS I tried to implement, Google Analytics tag I tried to place…

I seem to be getting off-track. That’s the subject of next Wednesday’s post, not today’s.

Things that actually make me happy:

  1. Watching the clouds change shape while looking out the top floor of a building.
  2. Randomly discovering a coupon for something I buy anyway.
  3. Talking to an extremely kind person in a place you wouldn’t normally expect.
  4. Watching the season cliffhanger of a TV show, and then immediately watching the follow-up episode because it’s already out.
  5. Doing anything in the world with Nikki.

Favourite video game character?

Sanic teh Edgehog…
is not an actual video game character.

Actually it’s Wind Waker Link. He wasn’t the chosen hero. He wasn’t granted divine power by the gods. He wasn’t trained for years to defeat the land’s evil.

He was just a boy.
Trying to save his sister.

Wind Waker Link is awesome.

What was the last game you played?

I’m pretty sure everyone’s last video game, myself included, is Octopath Traveler. I’m also pretty sure we’re all still on Chapter 1.

If you could experience one game again for the first time, what game would you choose?

ALL OF THEM!

But more specifically, Kirby’s Adventure on the NES. It was my first video game, and I’d love to experience those feelings again.

Are there any games that you wish had got a sequel?

Ristar on the Genesis! I don’t understand why Sega hasn’t given this game a proper sequel, especially in today’s climate of platformer experimentation.

Favourite way to play: PC or console?

Console! I can’t stand playing on PC. I know that’s blasphemous, but I just don’t understand how people sit at a PC for hours at a time.

*types a 1,200-word blog on a PC*

Home console or handheld (or in the case of a switch – docked or handheld)?

For the Switch, my preferred method is handheld, even if I’m in my apartment and have easy access to the TV. I am strange.

If you could have a video game character as a sidekick who would you choose?

I’m trying to imagine Tails trying to fly me to inaccessible places, only to realize I’m a 6′ 7” (2.05 m) guy who’s far to heavy to be propelled in that manner. I’d still like him along, though, if only for the free hits on enemies.

Crash Bandicoot or Spyro the Dragon?

Cryro the Bandigon!
or perhaps Spysh the Drandicoot.
I’d play the heck out of Spysh the Drandicoot.

Crash, but they are two different genres. Nikki, however, is preferential to Spyro.

Pikachu or Eevee?

Eevee, but only because the name is a palindrome. Can you tell I’m not really into Pokemon?

Games based on films or films based on games?

Not sure, but whatever Wreck-It Ralph was, I want more of that!

Nominees!

To obtain a Normal Happenings Super Specific Sunshine Award, not to be confused with a Strange Occurrences Sunshine Award, a Sunshiny Sunshine Award of Awesome, or simply a Sunshine Award, the following ten of you are requested and required to answer my ten super specific questions in a separate blog post. Consider this your official invitation.

Super Specific Questions

I know that if I don’t say it, someone else will. Yes, pedantically, some of these aren’t proper questions. But, if you like, you can add the words “will you” to the beginning of any command sentences and form questions. Problem solved.

  1. This one should be fun! Ask a person you’re close to how their doing, either in-person or over text messages. Then, as they reply, spend the next few minutes repeating back everything they say as a question. For example:
Friend: Are you just repeating back everything I say?
    You: Everything you say?
How did they react? How long did it take before they wanted to kill you?

  2. How would you finish this joke?
A paperclip, a sticky note, and a pair of scissors walk into a bar…

  3. What is your favorite hour, of your favorite day, of your favorite month, of your favorite season? (Make sure you show your work — it helps to read this question backwards.)

  4. And suddenly, you wake up. Real life has been a dream this whole time, and you’re actually living in the world of a book or video game. What’s more, it’s your wedding day. What character in what work is your soon-to-be-spouse?

  5. Story time! The last thing you ate comes to life! Oh bother. Craft a story of five sentences or less with that sentient consumable as a central plot mechanic.

  6. I have a spider that has decided to make it’s home on the corner of my front door. It keeps rebuilding its web no matter how many times I knock it down. What should I name this resilient arachnid?

  7. Oday ouyay igpay atinlay?

  8. Useless Superpower Bedbug: The Return!
Which of the following useless superpowers would choose and why?
    – The ability to become invisible, but only when nobody is looking at you
    – The ability to teleport anywhere within a 100 yard (91.4 m) radius… but the process takes longer than it does to walk there
    – The ability to type backwards at the same speed as typing normally

  9. My desktop background bores me once again. What should I change it to this time?

  10. Describe how you feel about my super-specific questions, but give me the exact opposite of your true feelings.

If you weren’t nominated, that’s totally okay! Play along in the comments! If I like your answer, I may nominate you for a  future super specific award. I’m looking forward to seeing your responses!

Nice Job Badges | July 27

The time has come once again to tell people what a NICE JOB they are doing!

My apologies for not doing them last week, but considering how surprisingly popular sign-ups for The Games That Define Us is, I didn’t dare do anything to mess with success! Amazingly, thanks to you all, the 30-slot main series is full, and three out of the five available DLC slots are locked in. If you want to be one of the last two bloggers to be involved in this epic collab, you should probably go sign up like five minutes ago.

With that out of the way, it’s Nice Job Badge time!

Nice Job Badges for July 13 + Hyrule Collab Follow-up

Friday! If you’d like to know my day of the week rankings if they were metaphors for real-life people, here they are:

  1. Saturday
  2. Friday
  3. Sunday
  4. Wednesday
  5. Thursday
  6. Monday
  7. Tuesday

Monday and I get along okay, though I’d never go out to coffee with Monday. But Tuesday is inevitably, necessarily, evil. I’m convinced Tuesday would murder me in my sleep if given the opportunity. But you’re not here to talk about anthropomorphized days of the week! You’re here to talk about the awesome thing that happened a couple days ago. You know, the Zelda thing!

I’m just blown away! Hyrule: See the Sights! Hear the Sounds! has absolutely been a success, garnering lots of great praise in the form of comments and tweets. People seem to really enjoy the art, personal stories, and particularly the music.

I briefly considered “DLC” for the Hyrule post, where people who didn’t know about it could submit stories of their own and I’d make them individual posts in the same style. However, I think I’ll hold off on that in case I ever want to put together a Hyrule: See the Sights, Hear the Sounds Again! Quality over quantity is always the correct course of action.

You should know that I have a nearly completed plan for another interesting collaboration, in the works. I intend to announce full plans for it sometime next week, though I want to give Hyrule contributors first dibs. It took precisely three months (April 11 – July 11) from planning to completion of this one, so I would expect an October release date for the next one. More information to follow.

Anyway, it’s Nice Job Badge time! These are five blog links from this week that deserve a high-five and a “nice job!”

Nice Job Badges! | July 6

Happy Friday, or as my wife so affectionately calls it, Friyay! Let’s get back on track with this week’s Nice Job Badges, of which we have a typically excellent variety.

But first, let me take a selfie… err, moment to talk about this super cool Hyrule Collaboration Blog that’s coming up on Wednesday! Namely, that I’m so happy with all the wonderful contributions I’ve gotten from these amazing bloggers. I’m getting the last batch of contributions over the weekend, and then it’ll be a long few days of intense design and editing.

So, again, Hyrule: See the sights! Hear the Sounds! will be released on Wednesday, July 11 at 10:00 A.M. EST! That’s approximately 3:00 P.M. for my U.K. audience! From more info, you can check out this post. You should also be sure to follow the amazing contributors listed at the end of this post.

Nice Job Badges! | June 29

It’s Friday, June–

Wait, it’s not Friday, June 29? What do you mean it’s Monday?

Fine, point taken, but you try reading every blog post in your WordPress reader during a week that involved both moving and a 1,200 mile (1,930 km) road trip! Essentially, it has been the busiest week ever. Therefore, I’ll be posting the new section of Dysontopia tomorrow instead of today.

Anyway, despite it being a Monday, it’s time for Nice Job Badges! These are five blog links this week that deserve a high-five and a “nice job!”
