Welcome to our first “official” Super Mario Maker 2 course!
Starting at the End
Play it for yourself: ID: YK4-MR9-00H
A Little Background!
A component of Megan’s piece was how she played the games in reverse order, and as such we wanted to develop the course in a reverse “S” shape. Toadette, who will be standing in for Yuna, travels to the end of her journey in short order, only to realize another set of challenges await. We intentionally withheld the fire flower until Toadette successfully navigated a number of progressively challenging battles and puzzles. Afterwards, she can gun down the Wigglers in a number of stylish ways.
One thing I enjoyed designing about this course was a forced difficulty redundancy. A clear condition is required for this course: 29 coins in fact. But, should you fail, you are not required to repeat the level. In fact, it’s impossible unless you start over.
Instead, there is pipe to the sub-world at the base of the flagpole. Inside are coins arranged in a VERY annoying pattern. You cannot get access this room if you succeed in the victory condition, and you cannot avoid it if you fail. As added punishment, once you come back up the pipe you’re forced to touch the very lowest point on the flagpole. FOR. SHAME. A true bad ending.
Where the Heck is the TCTDU Room?
Each course has a hidden TCTDU room as an homage to the hidden HAL rooms found in many Kirby games. I NEVER reveal them in the video. This one is fairly challenging to locate, so here’s a hint: you only have one chance to reach it, and it’s easy to go too far. To succeed in finding the TCTDU room, you must determine the difference in an otherwise consistent pattern. Perhaps more vaguely, you must alter your fate and find your own way.
Fun. So, Tell Us Who’s Next?
Next up is Katie from Musings of a Nitpicking Girl!
On Monday we’ll launch her piece on Roger Wilco from the Space Quest series!
See, reading these articles all the way through has one perk.
The Characters That Define Us is a year-long collaboration of bloggers from around the world, and with each comes a custom-made Super Mario Maker 2 Course inspired by their pieces!
