Nice Job Badges for August 17; or, Mild Concerns about Perpetual Hiccups

Let’s talk for a second about hiccuping. On Wednesday night I had what Nikki referred to as my “one hiccup of the year.” Nikki gets the hiccups all the time, but I only periodically have one massive hiccup, and even then it’s usually very rare.

I haven’t had proper hiccups since I was about 12 years old. This leads me to having a slight paranoia that I’m somehow due for hiccups — that one day I’m going to wake up with the hiccups and they are never going to go away. That I may spend the rest of my life unpredictably hiccuping during job interviews and speeches, and I will never be able to go to sleep again.

Anyway, for irrational glimpses like this into the strange mind of Matt, you should probably follow along on Twitter. It is, if you pardon the pun, a “happening” place right now. I never thought I’d catch Twitter-itus, but my gosh it’s fun. Once they expanded the character limit and added the ability to chain together Tweets, I could finally interact properly with the rest of the community.

So yeah, Normal Happenings Twitter — I’ll meet you there.

Hiccup stories aside, it’s Nice Job Badge time! These are five blog links from this week that deserve a high-five and a “nice job!”

THINGS:

  • If someone makes an amazing post one week, then makes another the next, I will feature them two weeks in a row.
  • I will not typically feature the same blogger twice on one list, unless I’m really blown away.
  • The posts will all loosely be from the current seven day period.
  • They are in no particular order because they’re all great.
  • Hey, you should totally put the badge on your recognized piece with a pingback to this post!

I ❤ NYC | Bizarre Brunette

Two weeks ago I visited New York City with my best friend. I have never been to NYC before and I didn’t know to expect. I try not to create expectations about a certain city or country because I find if I do, I’m going to be disappointed. Case in point when I visited Nashville last summer and being disheartened when I didn’t like Nashville as much as I perceived I would. Visiting NYC was an amazing experience and I cannot wait until my return trip.

Travel is the name of the game this week! Something about August brings out the traveler in me, and Nikki and I just booked a trip to NYC for October. That means I have to load a few “evergreen” posts into the Normal Happenings canon for that week. It also means that, Bizarre Brunette, I especially loved reading about your recent trip there! I’m glad you had a great time. Between the photos and your commentary, I simply cannot wait for my first visit to NYC.

Currently… + Coming Home Haul | A Geek Girl’s Guide

Let me explain where I went all of a sudden. For the summer, I do a lot of work travel. And I mean A LOT. And it’s constant travel and long work hours… And this year I made it extra hard on myself by taking classes for my master’s degree while working and traveling non-stop.

It’s good to see Michelle from A Geek Girl’s Guide making a triumphant return to blogging, though from the looks of things she’s been really busy! I know all too well how much mental power it takes to get a master’s degree, and this amazing blogger also details the adventures she’s been on over the past three-months. Go welcome her back!

This Da Lat Hotel is the Craziest House on Earth | Asiana Circus

This beautiful architectural masterpiece is an exploration of surrealism and it’s one of the landmarks of the city of Da Lat. What’s a surrealist building like in real life? Imagine a place where Tolkien meets Dali, Alice in Wonderland, and Gaudi with a big splash of tangled greenery. Because of its unique design, it quickly earned the name of ‘Crazy House’.

I know I’m usually pretty long-winded with the descriptions, but sometimes I uncover a travel blog post that I simply cannot properly describe. This is one of those cases, so you should definitely just go bask in the photos of the bizarre architecture and interesting color choices of this hotel. About all I can say is, “nice job!”

24 Hours in Brighton: Exploring | A Cornish Geek

I didn’t know much about Brighton before my visit and was amazed at how beautiful it is. In fact, after even a short time there, I think I’d be quite happy moving, if it wasn’t for the fact that everyone I love is based in Cornwall. It’s definitely a home from home. Look how pretty!

What a charming and beautiful English city! Though I’ve never been to England, Nikki certainly had, and I’m obsessed with its architecture and geography. Photos are so important in a travel post, and Emma does an amazing job detailing all of the city’s charm. I love all of the bright building murals!

I’m just sorry this brilliant blogger didn’t win the unicorn. Just read the blog post and you’ll know what I mean.

i would dance in a field of daisies | syncwithdeep

I would forget everything
and live every moment
without plans about future

The amazing blogger syncwithdeep has always been so supporting of Normal Happenings, liking — let me double-check — yep, liking literally every one of our posts! What you may not know is she is a superb poet, and this work really exemplifies the Normal Happenings theme of appreciating everyday life. There is an imagery and intensity to this poem that I cannot get enough of, so please go follow this fantastic blogger if you aren’t already.
